This article demonstrates essential steps necessary to take full advantage your new computer

So you went out and bought yourself a brand new computer. While setting up a new PC is a much simpler process than it once was, there are still a few steps should take into account if you want the best performance out of it.

Security Software

While many new computers do come with security software installed, it is normally trial software, which is only intended to work for a month or two then you will have to purchase the product or install your own software.

Luckily, however, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to spend more money as there are several security solutions out there you can get for free. For example, you could use Avast! or AVG’s free virus software and Zone Alarm’s free firewall software.

Bloatware

Normally when you purchase a new PC out of the box it will come with pre-installed software (also known as bloatware), some of which is useless and some which is also simply trialware that will expire a month or so after you install it (such as the above example of security software).

For this reason, it is essential to complete an inventory of the programs installed on your computer and remove anything that you do not want or don’t intend to use so you don’t end up wasting valuable computer resources. You should also take a close look at your start-up programs to make sure nothing is booting up that isn’t crucial.

Recovery Discs

These are one of the most important components of your new computer as they can save you from a massive headache in the future. If your computer comes with physical discs then you should ensure they are put in a safe place.

Most new computers, however, no longer come with recovery discs and it is up to the purchaser to make their own. Therefore, one of the first things you should do when setting up your new PC is make sure that you have created recovery discs.

Software

If you are planning on installing software from your old computer then you should first check to make certain it is compatible with your new computer, especially if the software is a few years old. Also, you may need to contact the software manufacturer directly as many software programs are only licensed to be used on one computer at a time, so you may need to reactivate them.

Importing your files

The first step in this process comes before you have purchased your new PC. Chances are you have photos, videos, music files and important documents on your old computer. The simplest way of transferring these files to your new computer is to back them up on something like an external hard drive. Then, when your new computer is ready to use, transferring your old files is a relatively simple process.

Hardware

Chances are that you will be connecting various pieces of hardware to your computer, such as a printer or wireless network card. You should make sure that the proper divers are installed and if your computer comes with a newer operating system and you are using peripherals that were connected to your old computer then you should make sure that you are installing updated drivers.

This may be tricky if you are installing a network card and don’t have an easy way of connecting your computer directly to the modem. The easiest way of resolving this is to download the drivers on another computer and then put the drivers on a flash drive.

Updates

You should also ensure that your operating system is fully updated. Even the newest computer will not be fully up to date. This may take some time, especially if the update includes a major item such as a service pack, so be patient.
